How to Get a U.S. Passport

Step 1: Choose the passport you need

Most travelers should get a Passport Book. A Passport Card is for land/sea travel to Canada, Mexico, Bermuda, and the Caribbean.

Step 2: Determine how you must apply

Apply in person with Form DS-11 for first-time applicants (or if your passport was lost/stolen/damaged, issued under age 16, or expired over 15 years ago). If eligible, renew by mail using Form DS-82.

Step 3: Gather required documents

Bring proof of U.S. citizenship, photo ID, photocopies, one passport photo, the completed form, and payment.

Step 4: Complete the correct form

Use official forms from the U.S. Department of State. Print single-sided and don’t sign Form DS-11 until the acceptance agent tells you to.

Step 5: Get a passport photo

Your passport photo must be taken within the last 6 months, have a plain white background, and show your full face clearly. No filters or editing, and no hats or tinted glasses.

Step 6: Pay the fees

Pay the required passport fees (application fee plus acceptance fee). If you need your passport faster, you can request expedited processing for an additional cost.

Step 7: Submit your application

Turn in your form, supporting documents, photo, and fees at an authorized passport acceptance facility (often a post office, library, or county clerk office).

Step 8: Track your status

Use the U.S. Department of State’s online tracking tool to monitor your application status. You can also sign up for email updates.

Step 9: Receive and review your passport

When your passport arrives, check that your name and details are correct, sign it, and store it safely. Make a photocopy or digital copy for backup when you travel.
